A&T Trained Dogs have always taken pride in our ability to train any type of dog, with any problems, but even we were challenged by the arrival of a very aggressive German Shepherd.

However, with the poor 8-month-old puppy’s life literally hanging in the balance with only minutes before he was destroyed, we knew we had to use all our skills and experience to turn his behaviour around if he was to get the second chance at a life, that we all believe he truly deserved.

Lanes Vets in Lancaster contacted us to see if there was anything we could do with the eight month old dog, who took advantage of his 40 kilo stature, was vicious, out of control and prone to biting people. The dog had previously bitten 6 people, at one-point smashing his way through 2 internal doors to attack, just from hearing an unfamiliar voice in his home.

“The stakes were clear,” explained Bethany from Lanes Vets, “unless A&T could change the dog’s behaviour, we would have no choice but to put him down.” We literally had minutes to react, the call came in from the troubled team at Lane’s Vets at 4.30pm, if we couldn’t collect that day, the dog would be devastatingly be destroyed.

Fortunately, Tarik, our head trainer stepped up and collected the dog immediately, he took him to his own home to see what could be done. He was still aggressive and agitated, but Tarik had the patience, personality and practical skills needed to calm him down and start his re-training.

Over a period of weeks, Tarik took the dog through intense training, initially in isolation, then gradually socialising him with people and other animals.

Remarkably, the dog (Shelby as he is now named) that was once considered to be beyond help, with no option but to destroy him, was transformed by Tarik. He now has a great temperament, is relaxed with people and other dogs and, more importantly, he is completely safe to be around.

Tarik not only saved the dog’s actual life, but transformed him into a happy, social animal with a great future ahead of him. As a result, he was rehomed to live a happier, calmer life with his new family. We keep in touch with the new owners all the time and he is such a happy dog, with his new dog friend and happy human family.

Good luck Shelby – enjoy your happy life!
